Herbalism

Herbalism is the practice of using plants to cure ailments and use to use to enhance a spell. It is an ancient practice that has been used throughout the history of witchcraft, with many practitioners growing witch herbs themselves for their personal practices. In medical-related uses, it is used to detoxify the body, eliminate waste and help the body heal itself. Witch herbs can be taken in many ways: teas, tinctures, ointments, capsules, inhalation, and many more.

Besides medicinal purposes, herbs are also heavily used in spell work and rituals. They have great magical power since they are directly from the earth. Each herb has unique properties that can enhance your spells and rituals. Herbs are best collected in the morning after the sun has dried the moisture on them. Use a boline to cut them, and harvest only the amount needed unless you are pruning to ensure healthy growth for future plants.

After your plants are collected you can preserve them by drying them for extended use, which will allow you to work with plants that are out of season of those that can’t be grown in your region. You can dry them by hanging them upside down in small bunches, making sure to give them enough room for the air to circulate around it, away from sunlight until dry and in a well-ventilated area. Dried witch herbs are frequently used already chopped, cut or powdered. Make sure to label your herbs if you are doing so they don’t get confused. Another botanical that is often used in witchcraft are roots. They are a very magically potent part of the plant. If you can, buy the whole root and grind and powder yourself, so you know that the herb is actually the herb you need. When ground down, roots can look similar so when purchased they may be mislabeled.

Below is an index of different herbs and intentions that can be used for each and categories of spells. It will be updated often, so make sure to check back for new herbs that you can use.

PLEASE NOTE, research thoroughly before harvesting and working with herbs. We are not professional herbalists and the info below is a starting point to understand the purpose and general usage or witch herbs. Some herbs can be poisonous and harmful if touch and/or ingested. All plants with the potential of being harmful will be labeled as such below. Be smart, and make sure you know how to work with them properly and safely. Some herbs have not been listed due to their dangerous and deadly properties.

“Using terms like magic and witchery—it’s limiting to have a strict definition. We don’t tell anyone what to be.”
